i'm finally ready to share my easy-as-pie decorating tip. i really wanted to wait until i felt the wall was "finished," but i'm realizing that will probably take a few months of income and inspiration. anyways, like i've mentioned a dozen times, i'm currently broke and trying to make it to the end of august without spending money.

ta-da! embroidery hoops are super cheap, and so are fabric samples. think $5 for the whole set, and that's rounding way up. simply fill some up, and cover your wall in whatever colors, patterns, and sizes you want! it looks like my hoop is empty, but it actually has a delicately patterned white piece of fabric covering it. to attach the fabric to the hoop, you can sew it up around the back, hot glue it, or decoupage. i went the decoupage route, because i had some glue and know how to make homemade modge podge. i'm going to mix and match hoops as well as some photographs, sketches, etc. (like that little chanel bottle eek! how cute) that i have around my home. hopefully the effect will be a boho-glam gallery wall. i'm going for a "minimalist" look in my bedroom, so my bedding is off-white and a lot of the decor will be as well. i have some lace paper that will be in a hoop too, but i want a much smaller hoop for that, so i'm waiting before i put it up. what do you think? are you digging the minimalist look? is all or mostly white too much for you?

I really must get better at updating often.

Good news: my mother is going to teach me how to sew! I've yet to find time (haha?) to actually go to her house and learn, but it's in the plans for this month. I also finally got my library card. I picked up Love in the Time of Cholera, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. He's my favorite author, but I just never got around to reading this one somehow. I'll let you know my feelings when I'm done with it.

It's also stopped raining every moment of every day in North Carolina, so I got to do a little sunbathing. I'm still pale as a ghost, but I think my body needed the sunlight. I've also been doing some group classes at the gym. Have you ever tried Bodypump?? Holy cow, my glutes are still sore two days later. One of the instructors that I loved in high school saw me leaving, and recognized me! He's approximately 95 and the buffest man I've ever seen. Might be an exaggeration, but I'm taking one of his classes tomorrow and I'm scared.

I've slowed down on some of my projects, and I've been watching more Netflix these past few days. Here's a quick and easy project I did a few weeks ago.

It's an easy peasy sticky note calendar! It was slightly time consuming, because I cut my sticky notes to fit the nice paper I had. It's purple and mint green, and I used a silver sharpie. I think it's cute for a calendar! At the very least, it occupied some time. I think it's self-explanatory, but if you need to know how I made it, feel free to ask.

To end this post, here's some inspiration I found on the super-inspiring The Militant Baker website.

This post will be mostly stuff I put on my face/body. Get ready for a whole shit ton of pictures (lol by that I mean more than one, apparently)!

I rarely wear make up, and when I do it's usually just mascara and eyeshadow. However, I am a lipstick hoarder.

Please excuse the horrible picture quality. Just taking pictures on my MacBook for now...

These are just the lipsticks I use, I have about ten more that I probably only wore when I tried it on in the store. The 4 tall crayons in back are Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains. I am the biggest fan! They are minty and feel like chapstick going on, but give your lips a pretty kiss of color. I usually just put it on, then use regular chapstick the rest of the night, because the color does layer on. I have Romance, Lovesick, Honey, and Smitten. Honey doesn't show up on my lips, but I was going for something with brown in it. I wouldn't recommend that shade. The other 3, I adore.

I also want to mention the orange-pink in front, purchased at the height of the coral lip phase. This is an Ulta brand lipstick in Hot Coral (208). I get a ton of compliments when I wear it, and I highly recommend it. At $4, it's really a great deal. Finally, I also bought a matte nude lipstick that I like to wear, but it tends to get cakey. Any suggestions other than to buy a better (read: more expensive) brand? Once I start teaching in the fall, I want to wear lipstick more regularly to appear more mature. I'll let you know how that one goes.

Okay, as soon as I start making money, I'll buy a camera.

This is what I wear on a "regular basis." I usually don't bother unless I'm going to church/work/a restaurant. I use a powder mineral foundation, and if I have any blemishes, I use Clean & Clear spot treatment. It works like a charm. For a concealer, I use the double duty bareMinerals Blemish Therapy. It reduces redness and hides any bumps. I am the proud owner of a zillion freckles, so I don't use anything more than a light veil of powder. For my eyes, I use my Sephora lash plumper mascara and stila eyeshadow in kitten, which I'm pretty sure was made by the gods themselves. I like thick lashes more than long ones, and I'm almost out of mascara. Which mascaras do you recommend?

Backwards type to make you dizzy

On top of occasionally wearing makeup, I also take showers and use lotion. I have what honestly must be the best two shampoos ever. Holy cow, they cost some money though. I have the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo, which is great for cleansing and smells AH-mazing. My mom used to use this on me when I was a wee child, and so it gives me a great sense of shower-nostalgia. It costs about $13 at Ulta, and a little more at CVS. I also splurged after my last big paycheck, and bought a bottle of Wen in fig. Since it's so expensive, and the bottle I'm estimating would only last me a month, I alternate between the two. Wen is a cleansing conditioner, so there's no sudsy mess. It doesn't make your hair greasy, but leaves it all kinds of silky.

Not pictured is the Murad face wash I swear by. Unfortunately, it fell out of my suitcase during my recent vacation. Horrible, I know. I have extremely dry skin, and eczema on my scalp and random other spots. To keep my face moisturized, I use this Burt's Bees hydrating mask. It smells like your grandma, but it keeps my face from flaking for about a week, even in the winter. I use Neutrogena light sesame formula body lotion all over, and I love the description they give. I think it fits perfectly: a whisper light skin-silkening moisturizer. I will also use the matching body oil, but it can be so messy that I usually leave it out. Via Pinterest, I found Tokyo Milk which has the most beautiful packaging. I have their hand cream in Excess, from the Dark collection. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm it smells so good. Two of the notes are blood orange and patchouli. It makes my heart go pitter patter.

Okay, I think I'm done being self-centered and staring at all the things I own. I hope you enjoyed reading my rambling for a while. I've officially moved into my new home. It's lovely, to say the least. I'm living alone, which is a nice change. I've been lucky in my living situations thus far in life, but I knew I wanted to live alone for this next year. I do much better with (a lot of) my own space when I'm under pressure, and with my first year of my new career, I'll certainly be under a lot of it.

Anyways, along with moving, I'm not making any money these days. So, moving to a new city, with no money, leads to a bored little Celeste.

You know, I've thought of the usual things. The library, for one. I went the other day, but apparently you need TWO things to prove residency, and silly old me, I only brought one. I baked a gallette the other night, to waste time. It tasted pretty good, but I didn't put foil around it, and the juice leaked all over my oven and made a smoky mess. For now, I suppose I'll continue my Netflix obsession. I'll check back in as soon as I have something of interest to report.Celestehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05967712431619460925noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8955961833971278749.post-47606920134798094922013-06-28T20:32:00.003-04:002013-06-28T20:32:53.893-04:00End of the year goals I wrote back in December about my goals for this year. One of them was to try new things. I've been thinking about that a lot as I'm getting ready to a new city and start my career. I want to settle on some nice hobbies to fill the void and give me a creative outlet. Here's what I'm thinking these days:

I want to learn how to make my own sushi. I LOVE sushi. If I had to eat it every day, I would be more than okay with that. I don't think it will be that difficult to accomplish, but I need to invest the time, money, and energy to get started.

I want to learn how to sew. I can hand-sew just fine, and I like to embroider things, but I want to be able to make things. It'd be nice to just buy the fabric and make a dress that fits me perfectly.

Of course, I want to dedicate more time to this blog!

What are your hobbies? Any tips on my hopefully future hobbies?Celestehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05967712431619460925noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8955961833971278749.post-67018961767384825962013-06-27T19:52:00.000-04:002013-06-27T19:52:24.864-04:00Books and thingsI've been off on a trip abroad! I spent last week in Mexico, as a lovely graduation present from my parents. It was wonderfully relaxing.

Before I left, I was waiting to post again until I finished a book, because I really wanted to talk about it on here. I was moving my books from my parents' house into my new apartment, and noticed a book by Nicole Krauss on my bookshelf. I'd never seen it before, so who knows where it came from! It's called The History of Love, and I'd actually pinned it months ago. I read it over a few days, even though it's a fairly short and easy read. It's a mash up of several intertwined story lines, including a refugee from WWII, a Jewish girl whose father passed away, and an author of a book that changes all of their lives. It reminded me of Jonathan Safran Foer's novels, but perhaps a bit drier. It was perfect beach reading material, but I unfortunately finished it before my vacation.

On my vacations, I like to have several books to read, because I won't read most of the time at home. I spaced on stopping by the library before, so I stopped at my best friend's apartment instead. I picked up a couple books, but only got to one of them. Oddly enough, I chose to read Lolita on the beach. I had never read it, and I feel like the classics are something everyone should read. I don't know how I feel about the book. It was difficult to read, not because it was too dry or anything, but because of the content. It was easy to forget Lolita was a child, and that made it hard to swallow. I finished it however, on the night we got back from Mexico. Any thoughts on Lolita? What classics do you feel are a must read? Any other book recommendations?

Next week, I'll be moving finally, so expect to hear more from me!

Quick updates:

I finished my internship back in April! It was one of the most rewarding experiences I've had. It took up all of my free time though. I was struggling to fit everything in. I had to make sacrifices, like only watching tv in the bathtub.

I cut off all my hair in February. Oops.

I graduated from college? What?

Due to some unfortunate events, I've been couchsurfing for almost a month. Luckily, I've been able to settle down some. I still won't be completely settled until July, so don't be surprised if I'm not overly present.

So, I've just been working a lot, trying to get a tan, and drinking too much. I also started watching Grey's Anatomy. Oh my glob, it's so (bad)good. Anyways, with this roundabout re-introduction, I hope to start posting again! Let me know you're listening.

Celestehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05967712431619460925noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8955961833971278749.post-81236134450171033782013-01-21T16:30:00.000-05:002013-07-15T14:38:09.626-04:00Another food postYou guyssssss...
I've been so exhausted every night. Any kind of creative thought has seemed simply impossible. I got so tired that I stopped making myself lunch for my internship. I have just been grab-bagging it. Example: one day I had snapea crisps, a can of pineapple, and some frozen peas. I know, you're jealous.

Well, this long weekend gave me a chance to refresh. Last night, I tried two new things. Both food-related, of course.

I bought this Cascadian Farms Ancient Grains Granola, and I am digging it. Not digging the price. Think around $5. No bueno. So, I did some googling and found a quinoa granola recipe! I read over it briefly, just to get an idea of how one goes about making granola.

I mixed together about a cup of oats, a cup of buckwheat groats, a third of a cup of tricolor quinoa in with a ton of coconut, a handful of chia seeds and some cinnamon. Then, I mixed in half of a cup of honey and half of a cup of coconut oil. I would most certainly either up the portion of oats or lower the amount of honey. It was toooooo sweet. Overall, I'm excited about how it turned out. I will keep you updated on the other granola-esque concoctions I end up with.

I also tried to make some Filipino food. To be specific, I tried to make ginataang bilo-bilo, which is a rice flour dumpling in a coconut milk stew. It's supposed to be a dessert, but I was envisioning it like a dumpling version of oatmeal. It's made with jackfruit and tapioca pearls, traditionally. I had some tapioca pearls on hand, but no jackfruit, so I made it with some mango instead. I think I made it properly, but I just wasn't enjoying the dumplings themselves. I am proud of myself for trying at least. Of course, I didn't take any pictures. So, you can just google this stuff and imagine that's what it looked like.

Happy MLK Jr. Day everyone : )Celestehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05967712431619460925noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8955961833971278749.post-25447396385051723832013-01-02T19:17:00.002-05:002013-01-02T19:18:26.284-05:00Bitter and not at all sweetSo, day two of no pizza and also my first full day at my new internship. (I've also got this sweet gig volunteering to help teach kids how to cook healthy delicious foods in an after school program, and my first day was today!) I had this tantalizing image in my head the entire drive home: a gorgeous, orange sweet potato dripping with butter and slightly caramelized from the oven. I opened the fridge when I got home, and then remembered how long ago I'd cooked the sweet potato. It was not a pretty picture.

Eh, whatever. I've got a couple foods in the fridge, no problem. I get this amazing idea: red beans and rice with the kielbasa I bought yesterday. Except, no red beans on hand, but I had black beans. Then, I thought omg beer. And risotto! And cheddar! Sounds like a good idea right? I've been wanting to try and create my own "recipes," so I googled to see if other people had done similar things. They had. So I went right ahead. Grabbed an IPA, some onion, garlic, risotto, cheese, kielbasa.. All it needed was a kick. I noticed a can of tomatoes and green chiles, so I grabbed that too. I started cooking my risotto and onions and garlic and beer concoction. It tasted soooooo good. Then, I think I made what was the fatal mistake. In went that can of tomatoes and green chiles. Despite the label "MILD" on the front of the can, it was spicy as hades. I think this numbed my tongue a bit. I added in the cheddar and kielbasa, and it seemed too good to be true. It was.

I just sat down with a large bowl and took a bite. I have never been more disappointed in my life. Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration. But, the dish was so bitter, I am now just eating tiny little bites, avoiding the tomatoes and lapping up the kielbasa. Granted, it could have been a bad choice of beer or the cheese might have been too funky, but I think it was something in that can. Oh well, at least I tried!
Oh, and happy new year!

I told my roommate there are two things she can find in the fridge if I'm having a bad day: cheese dip or pizza. Classy, right? To be specific, my downfall is delivery pizza. You know, the kind you can order online, without talking to anyone in person? It's a good way to avoid any shame. Well, this weekend was no different.

As soon as I ordered the pizza, I realized that it was maybe a little bit of self-destructive behavior. The first two pieces were delicious, and it went downhill from there. Anyways, I've decided to give up my crux in 2013. You might ask, what in the world will you replace the pizza with, Celeste?? I'm asking myself the very same question.

During a stint of one of my other favorite things, pinning recipes I can't make and clothes I can't afford, I stumbled upon this little article on Women's Health Magazine's website. What? Eating that beats stress? Yum!

What about you? What are you giving up or adding to your new year? How do you beat stress or the blues?Celestehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05967712431619460925noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8955961833971278749.post-75155641954222138082012-12-26T22:02:00.003-05:002012-12-26T22:03:12.587-05:00Goals?To be fair, I'm starting this blog with a cold that makes me feel like I have a tube of sandpaper in place of my throat, but I'm too excited to not write another post.

I'm a big goal-setter. I write lots of to-do lists. I mean, probably at least one a day. Usually, I will write them while I'm supposed to be paying attention in class (oops), shove them in the pocket of my jacket or my purse on my way out of said class, and then forget about them until a minimum of two days later. Needless to say, this is not an effective method of setting goals.

The new year is headed fast my way, and I want to set some goals this year that I will keep track of on this blog. Now, I know all about SMART goals, but truth be told I'm feeling lazy. So, here's a list of the goals I'm thinking of.

Be healthier.
I think keeping my health is my main goal. I want to cook more, eat out less. Work on my fitness levels, watch less tv, read more. Maintain some level of sanity. Find a balance. These days I am pretty good about cooking as opposed to eating out. However, I am starting a full time internship in a week, and I don't want to see this habit go down the drain.

Save money.
This one I can be pretty smart about. I have a pretty sweet tutoring gig, but I've been blowing the income on my favorite things: drinks with my friends and useless home decor. I'd like to save all (or at least most?) of the money I make from tutoring this semester. You can tell the part of my heart reserved for fancy cocktails is already cringing.

Try new things.
I want to do a lot of new things. I want to knit. Ride a bike instead of driving. Join a CSA! Garden. The hard part is, which ones do I really want to do?

What goals do you have for the new year? What kind of goals have you stuck to and completed?
Any advice for my goals?Celestehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05967712431619460925noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8955961833971278749.post-90370195755891432562012-12-26T21:49:00.001-05:002012-12-26T21:49:15.490-05:00Dying for some actionI clipped this blog's name from one of my favorite songs. For me, it represents a combination of nostalgia and uncontrollable dancing.

I hope to use this space as a creative outlet, to share things I love, and to focus.

So who am I? I'm a twenty two year old student, about to start my last semester of college. I love cooking, pretty things, and my best friends. I live in a small house, in an amazing city. I'm a horrible writer, but enthusiastic about this space. Thanks for joining me on this ride!Celestehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05967712431619460925noreply@blogger.com0
